Nothing beats hopping on your bike, heading out into the wilderness and viewing some stunning scenery. Luckily, here in the UK, we’re drenched in beautiful countrysides and forests from head to toe. Whether it’s the chilly Scottish weather or the delights of the Lake District, there’s no shortage of fantastic bike routes to conquer. Here are eight of the best!
Helvellyn and Sticks Pass, Lake District
Starting off from one of the largest lakes in the district, Helvellyn is one of the largest peaks in the whole area. On this route, you’ll ascend the mountain before beginning your speedy descent down Sticks Pass. Use those brakes!
Scotland is notorious for its cold weather, so this is one to warm you up. A gradual hill that stretches for ages and ages, it eventually becomes difficult once the hill steepens. Don’t get complacent in those early stages, and prepare for the beautiful view at the very top!
Surrey, The Hills
The leafiest trail on this list, Surrey Hills is a straightforward single track that will prove no challenge for people of all skill level. The reward here comes from the beautifully dense, coloured bushes surrounding you on either side. Focus on the narrow path, and keep your eyes ahead for a fun ride.
Swinley Forest, Berkshire
The Pine Wood Swinley Forest
A perfect mix of rides for pros and novices, Swinley Forest is a colossal pine area and is lacking in steep hills, a forgiving factor for all bikers. It’s a single trail that will be a breezy, short ride for all.
Rhyd Ddu, Wales
Looking like something out of Lord of the Rings, this Snowdon based trail will take you all the way to the top of Wales’ highest peak.
Don’t be discouraged though. What goes up must come down, and you’ll enjoy a rollicking descent down to Llanberis, a gorgeous little lakeside village.
Best get some bicycle insurance for this one. Featuring a graveyard, a dam and a reservoir, this trail is one of the wildest in the UK, and not one to be taken lightly.
It’s a dark, gloomy ride, with the overhanging trees giving a feeling of foreboding. At the same time, it’s incredibly rewarding. It’s a rocky, unstable path that will feel immensely rewarding to complete. And, if you’re lucky enough to have the sun shining, this will be one of the most memorable times you can spend on your bike.
Gower Peninsula, Wales
The Gorgeous Gower Peninsula
If a beautiful beach is what you’re after, Gower Peninsula is for you. It’s got dozens of great trails, and many provide superb views over the coastline.
It’s the essence of a perfect bike trail, combing hilly moments with level ones, and it’s got the views to match. Sand, ridges and grass aplenty, you can’t go wrong here, and it’s the finest way to spend your bike time in the UK.
